1. Tumescent
liposuction is a dermatologic
surgical procedure that is proven to be safer
than other methods of liposuction. Tumescent liposuction was invented
and perfected by dermatologists working with liposuction in the fatty
layer which is a defined component of the human skin, the largest
organ in the human body. Unfortunately, the technique has been improperly
modified by other specialty groups who still cling to the name of
the original procedure invented by Klein.
2. Relatively large
liposuction cases can be handled safely and with predictable results
using the tumescent method.
3. The risks of general
anesthesia are eliminated if "twilight"
or no sedation is used with tumescent liposuction. The risks associated
with general anesthesia include risks associated with endotracheal
intubation, significant blood loss, hypoxemia (low blood oxygen) among
others.
4. The targeted fat compartments
can be anesthetized (numbed) individually with tumescent liposuction.
5. Blood loss has
been greatly reduced with tumescent liposuction. Usually, only 12
cc of blood is lost for each liter of fat that is removed with tumescent
liposuction. More blood than this (about 24 cc) is taken during a
routine preoperative (before surgery) blood test!
6. Blood transfusions
and intraoperative IV fluid replacement are rarely if ever necessary
with tumescent liposuction.
7. Sensations felt
during the suctioning portion of tumescent liposuction are usually
minimal. Without the anesthesiologist,
patients may have intraoperative discomfort. Patients with a history
of pain sensitivity will likely benefit from having an anesthesiologist
"stand by" or administer some sedation. Patients who have never had
surgery may wish this option as may those with large or many areas
planned for liposuction.
8. Recovery and return to work
and daily functions are faster following tumescent liposuction as opposed
to traditional/standard liposuction.
9. The postoperative recovery
period at home is usually one to two days. Many patients wish to have their
liposuction performed on Thursday or Friday to take advantage of weekend
(non-work) days.
10. Postoperative (immediately
following surgery) discomfort is typically minimal. Significant numbing usually
lasts for eighteen hours in the suctioned areas. This is yet another major
advantage that tumescent liposuction has over the other methods. There is
usually much less bruising and swelling with tumescent liposuction than there
is with standard liposuction under general anesthesia. In comparison, patients
who have undergone standard liposuction under general anesthesia are customarily
very bruised, very sore, and may be incapacitated for weeks following the
procedure.
11. Numerous peer-review
medical journal studies have confirmed that the cosmetic results of
tumescent liposuction are excellent.
