Those individuals best suited for liposuction contouring are active and healthy persons of average or near-average weight (those who are overweight can also benefit) and those who have good skin tone. Realistic expectations are important. Age by itself is not a very significant factor. In fact, patients from age 16 to those over 80 years of age have benefited from liposuction. Liposuction is a good choice for those patients who have done just about everything possible to rid themselves of unwanted fat accumulations and to seek improvement in their bodies' silhouettes. ATTENTION: The author will not suction anyone under 18 years of age for numerous reasons including: the achievement/establishment of a steady-state metabolism and body size and body proportion; need for decision-making maturity on the patient and not just the parents (and the need to recognize the commitment of exercise and proper eating habits). Please do not contact the author about your son or daughter until they are at least 18 years old. When fatty deposits are removed by liposuction, the stretched overlying skin must contract (shrink) to have a smooth, tight fit. In those who are obese, have large fatty areas, or have stretch marks, the skin may not have the ability to contract (shrink) enough which may result in the formation of loose-appearing skin, skin folds, constrictive bands, grooves, or rippling. In these instances, removal of excess skin may be necessary to achieve a smooth result. Unfortunately, the surgical removal (by cutting) of excess skin must result in the formation of a scar which may be unsightly in some surgeons' hands. However, the scar may be more desirable than leaving the redundant skin fold. Some of these procedures are referred to as the "tummy tuck," "arm reduction," and "leg reduction.
